Rodney Creech | The Ohio House of Representatives
State Representative Rodney Creech (R-West Alexandria) has introduced a bill aimed at protecting professional athletes by mandating the use of natural grass fields in professional sports stadiums. This legislative proposal, co-sponsored by State Rep. Terrance Upchurch (D-Cleveland), specifically requires that these stadiums have fields composed of at least 90% natural grass, maintained to industry standard levels for high-performance field surfaces.
Creech commented on the legislation, stating, “Ohio has two fantastic NFL franchises that make up a large part of our economy and culture. This legislation prioritizes the safety of our professional athletes and supports Ohio’s sports industry.”
The bill comes as a direct response to the higher rate of injuries observed on synthetic turf fields. Currently, there is an equal split among NFL stadiums, with 15 utilizing natural grass and 15 employing synthetic turf.
The proposed legislation is currently awaiting assignment of a bill number and House committee.
