On Friday, October 21, 2022, at approximately 7:45 AM Tactical Officers from the Sidney and Piqua Police Departments attempted to serve a narcotics search warrant at 219 Doering St, Sidney. Upon making contact at the residence and breaching the door the Tactical Officers were met with verbal threats by a male occupant, identified as John Hoying age 60, telling officers he had a gun. Upon hearing the verbal threat officers pulled back from the interior of the residence and surrounded it. Tactical Officers attempted to verbally engage Hoying to come out but the commands went unanswered.
Manpower and equipment from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and the Allen County Sheriff’s Office was summoned to assist with breeching and tear gas operations. Negotiators from Sidney and Piqua Police Departments responded to conduct verbal negotiations. Tactical Officers administered tear gas into the residence.
For approximately six hours Hoying did not respond to law enforcement’s communications. However with the assistance from family members Hoying finally broke his silence and was convinced to come out and surrender at around 1:43 PM. No one was injured during the incident but heavy damage was sustained to the residence during the tear gas and breeching operations.
Once the residence was secured detectives from the Sidney Police Department conducted a search of the residence. Money, cocaine, pills and paraphernalia were recovered. John Hoying was transported to the County Jail. Hoying has been charged with one count of Obstructing Official Business a felony of the 5th degree, one count of Trafficking in Drugs a felony of the 4th degree, and one count of Tampering with Evidence a felony of the 3rd degree.
