Tire Recycling Day Planned

On Wednesday, November 16 there will be a tire collection event for the residents of Shelby County. Pre-registration and payment in person is required prior to November 11, 2022. This can be done at the Shelby Soil and Water Conservation District office located at 822 Fair Road, (payment in cash or check only) $2 per passenger tire up to 20-inch rim size. Absolutely no farm or semi tires can be accepted.

The event will take place at the Shelby County Fairgrounds (enter from Highland Avenue main gate) Registrants will be assigned a time slot between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. There is a limit of 10 tires per person.

Illegally dumped or improperly stored scrap tires are not only a nuisance, but are also a health concern. Rainwater that accumulates in the scrap tires provides an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes that transmit a variety of diseases to people and animals. Illegal open burning of scrap tires can create immediate health hazards to persons with breathing problems and the environment. Sidney Codified Ordinance Section 521.09 states “No owner, occupant or person in charge of any lot or parcel or ground shall cause or permit or allow to exist, the deposit or accumulation on the exterior of the premises or upon any public area or private property; of junk, rubbish, garbage, or anything of an unsanitary or unsightly nature, or which creates a public nuisance.” This section includes junk tires.

Residents strongly encouraged to take advantage of this collection event and clean up any scrap tires stored on their property. There are no present plans to continue this event on a yearly basis; it is more of a ‘one-last time’ event.
