October 3, 2022 Hydraulic Canal & Dam Safety Design Community Summit

Please be advised that the City will host a Community Summit on Monday, October 3rd at 5:30 in the Grant Room of the Fort Piqua Plaza Banquet Center, 308 N. Main Street.

The City of Piqua with our partners OHM Advisors and Stantec will provide a presentation to the audience on the Hydraulic Canal and Dam Safety Design Project and then will field questions and take feedback in an open house setting.

There is a lot of information to present, and I am expecting a large group to attend. We’ve conducted much of our engagement in small group settings and have found success, but it’s clear that only so much discussion is possible with many voices in the room. This topic deserves time, so we will facilitate as much direct Q & A as possible by breaking out into smaller groups after the presentation. A survey will also be published and we will be happy to receive comments through the contact us form on the project website.

After this meeting and the publication of a survey, the engagement period will pause for a few months to allow the City to engage further with ODNR and model some of the scenarios for feasibility. We expect to reconvene in January or February of 2023 with CAC and Focus Group sessions, and we will have another Community Summit in early spring. By that time, our goal is to have a full understanding of the community’s values and desires as they relate to the hydraulic canal system to help narrow down scenario alternatives that will allow us to respond to ODNR’s directives.

A project that involves potential changes to a well-loved water system can naturally cause vitriol, but as project manager for the public engagement portion of this project, my respect and admiration for the people of this city have only increased. The many people who have had the opportunity to engage are employing empathy, creativity, and teamwork and have given much of their time. It has been a pleasure to meet so many of Piqua’s residents, and I look forward to meeting many more on October 3rd.
